Exceeds Expectations July 24, 2009 Patrick Camp 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
I didn't want to spend a lot of money on a TV because I'm in Iraq right now and I'm not sure I'll be able to bring it home. But I've become accustomed to playing xbox and my ps3 in HD and playing games on a 13" TV wasn't a lot of fun. I've not heard of Coby before, and the TV was only $360, so I was a little nervous about what the picture would look like, and what kind of condition it would be in after crossing the Atlantic and going through the army postal service. I ordered through J&R here on amazon, who did a good job of packing and shipping. It arrived unscratched and only took a week to get to me. The picture looks great with my xbox 360, and the sound is more than sufficient for the small room I'm living in right now.
Overall, I'm extremely happy with the TV and glad I didn't spend more money on the better known brands.
Great Value October 15, 2009 B. Bolling (Boston, USA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought this TV through J&R Music and computer and received the TV within 3 days of ordering it. I wasn't expecting a great TV and for $339.99 who would. When I got this TV, I was very surprised of the great value. The picture quality is ok without a HD source, but with an HD source, the picture is pretty good, not liquid clear, but good for $339.99. What I loved was the ease of setting it up and how my xbox 360 looks when I play games on it, absolutely awesome. I'm in a decent size dorm room and the sound is perfect for it. Overall I didn't expect much when buying this TV due to the price, but with the very fast shipment, the way my video games look, and the good quality sound, this TV deserved a 5 out 5.
Wasn't sure about Coby brand but overall pretty impressed. December 18, 2009 Kevin M. Woolery (Omaha, NE) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
My wife had a portable DVD player by Coby. The thing felt like junk and ended up basically breaking in half. She also won an under the cabinet DVD player by Coby that has worked flawlessly for almost 2 years now. So when looking into buying a Coby brand TV, I was definitely sceptical. We stumbled upon this TV at a local store on Black Friday. The price tag was at an astonishing $249. They had one on display and we thought it looked pretty nice. Piano black finish on the outside and the picture, even though only 720p, looked quite nice. We could hardly pass up the opportunity to purchase a 32" LCD HDTV for $250. Getting it home and unpackaging was simple. We had not purchased an HDMI cable yet but hooked it up to our digital cable box via component cables and thought the picture was fine. We ordered an HDMI cable off Amazon (less than $6 for a 6ft cable) and received it less than a week later. We switched out our cable box for an HD box, hooked it up via HDMI, and I must say, for a 32" HDTV that was less than $300, I could not be happier. The clarity is great, the darks look dark, and the picture is pretty vibrant when needed.
The remote control is pretty basic. But other than to turn it on, I have no need for it. I have the TV hooked up to an old surround sound system so I don't use the TV's sound. Although before I had it hooked up to the surround sound I thought the sound was sufficient for a smaller room.
When hooked up to a PC the picture looks pretty good as well. The only suggestion I would have is to use the HDMI connection (if your video card supports it) rather than the VGA connection. I tried both and must say the HDMI looks much better and fits the screen better.
I've yet to hook up my PS3 to this TV as I have it hooked up to our 50" Samsung and didn't feel the need to. Although, we did hook up the Wii to it, and even though Wii is not in HD, the picture does look quite a bit better than having it hooked up to a tube TV.
All in all, I am extremely satisfied with this TV. The picture is great, setup is relatively easy, and you can't find an HDTV of this size for less than $250. As I sit writing this review, I'm watching football on the NFL Network and it looks wonderful. I have also viewed college basketball, professional basketball, and UFC fights on Spike HD. Any sports fan will be more than satisfied watching sporting events on this TV.
As someone who is constantly looking at reviews online for purchases I am getting ready to make or just looking at something I might be interested in getting, I found the need to write one for this TV. I believe it will be worth your money to buy this TV and hopefully (time will tell) it will last you awhile.
The only complaint I have about this TV are the connections on the back of it. They are set up more like a monitor. Meaning, your connections are vertical rather than horizontal. I didn't find it that much of a problem, but it did take me a couple tries to figure out which connection was which. I have some experience in hooking up all kinds of electronics and usually have it done on the first try. With this TV and the connections on the back I found it a little confusing as to which were IN/OUT. After 3 or 4 times everything was working fine.
Great TV. Outstanding price. Looks great. Hope it lasts.
If a deal seems to be to be too good to be true, it usually is...NOT IN THIS CASE October 19, 2009 Marvin Cohn (San Antonio, TX) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you are a TV perfectionist "snob" looking for a top-of-the-line, super 32" HD picture quality TV, this is not it. However, everything the Coby 3217 TV has to offer is more than just adequate. In fact, it far exceeds many TV's costing as much as $200 more. The picture quality, compared to our 3-month old top-of the line Samsung, is pretty close. Only side-by-side can you tell the difference. The internal sound quality actually seems better...of course hooked up to a theatre-surround-sound, there is no difference.
There are only three minor complaints: 1) It is a little difficult to connect to the terminals on the back because they are recessed and vertical....I suggest "quick connects." However, this turns out to be an advantage in the long run in that wiring is concealed once you get it hooked up. 2) The remote is somewhat awkward to use (the menu system) and it is not lighted. 3) Specifically for us, and anyone else who has Direct TV, obtaining the codes for the Coby is difficult. You have to thumb through all the codes to find the right one. Once this tedious procedure is done, it's fine. (This is a "Direct TV" problem, having nothing to do with Coby. We are going to switch to U-Verse.)
I highly recommend this TV; and we are going to install these, instead of more costly TV's in our other two bedrooms. It gets a five star (and I am very critical) because of the value for the money and J&R's shipping and packaging was excellent.
